Is a Digital Copy of My Will Enough in South Africa?

No, in South Africa, only the original, signed paper version of your will is legally valid. The Master's Office won’t accept digital or scanned copies. If only a copy exists, your executor or a beneficiary must apply to the High Court to prove it’s your final will, which can be expensive and time-consuming.

At present, electronic wills, digital signatures, emails, videos, or scanned versions are not recognised under South African law. The law still requires a paper will, signed in ink, following the rules of the Wills Act 7 of 1953.

To avoid delays or disputes, make sure your will is printed, properly signed, and safely stored.
